Agricultural Applications

Create eco-friendly solutions such as biodegradable films, bioactive delivery systems for crop and livestock health, and biobased scaffolds for cellular agriculture. Our goal is to promote sustainable farming by providing alternatives to traditional inputs, minimizing environmental impact, and supporting a circular agricultural economy.

In this theme, we focus on direct on-farm solutions that harness the unique properties of cellulose- and protein-rich canola meal fractions. From biodegradable films for mulch and silage wraps to precision delivery vehicles for agrochemicals or livestock feed additives, our goal is to replace environmentally costly inputs with sustainable alternatives. In parallel, we will design biobased scaffolds for cellular agriculture, enabling lab-grown meat production with minimal resource consumption. These applications leverage the inherent biodegradability and functional versatility of canola meal, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, plastic pollution, and reliance on synthetic materials.

Each innovation will undergo techno-economic evaluation to ensure it meets real-world performance standards without imposing excessive costs on farmers. Additionally, we will integrate policy insights and socio-economic analyses, examining factors that drive farmer decision-making and promoting successful adoption of new eco-friendly practices. Through close collaboration with regulatory agencies and agricultural stakeholders, we will streamline the path from lab-scale prototypes to field deployment.

Ultimately, this effort will not only strengthens Canada’s position as a global agricultural leader but also fosters a circular, low-carbon economy—one where farmers reap both financial and environmental rewards from canola-based technologies.
